Swimming, Sleeping, and Showering: A Full-Scenario Guide
Share
Technically, PhilU projection jewellery is waterproof due to our sealed HD Nano-Carving. However, lifestyle habits impact optical clarity. We advise removing pieces before swimming to protect metal plating from chlorine corrosion, and before showering to prevent soap scum build-up which blurs the lens. Sleeping is generally safe for pendants, though we recommend removing fine chains to prevent tangling.
Living With Your Memory
I know the feeling. You open the box, you see the face of someone you love hidden inside the stone, and your first instinct is: "I am never taking this off."
It is a beautiful sentiment. You want them with you in your dreams, in the ocean, and in the quiet moments of the morning. As a designer, I build our pieces to be robust—we use 316L Stainless Steel and Sterling Silver because they are tough. But as an optical engineer, I have to be honest with you about the physics of daily life.
Wearing a projection necklace is a bit like wearing a pair of glasses. You wouldn't wear your glasses in the shower and expect them to stay clean, right? Here is my gentle, honest guide on how to live with your jewellery without compromising the memory inside.
Scenario 1: The Shower (The "Blurry" Trap)
The number one email I get in our Sydney studio is: "Help! My photo has gone foggy!" Almost always, the culprit is the shower.
The Physics of Soap Scum
Our Nano-Carving is etched into the crystal structure of the 5A Zirconia. It is waterproof. Water cannot wash the photo away. However, body wash, shampoo, and conditioner contain oils and surfactants. When you shower, a thin film of this residue sticks to the flat back of the projection stone.
- The Result: The lens is no longer clear; it's coated in opaque film. Light can't get through, so the photo looks dark or blurry.
Step-by-Step: The Shower Recovery Routine
If you do forget to take it off (we all do it!), here is how to fix the blur.
- Step 1: Mix warm water with a tiny drop of dishwashing liquid (it cuts grease better than hand soap).
- Step 2: Dip a soft cotton bud into the soapy water.
- Step 3: Gently wipe the flat back of the stone. This is crucial—most people only clean the front, but the light enters from the back!
- Step 4: Rinse with fresh water and pat dry. The "fog" should disappear instantly.
Scenario 2: The Ocean & Pool (The Metal Killer)
I love a swim at Bondi as much as anyone, but I always leave my projection necklace in my bag. Here is why.
Chlorine vs. Gold
If your piece is Rose Gold or 18k Gold Vermeil, chlorine is the enemy. It is a harsh chemical that eats away at the copper in Rose Gold and strips gold plating over time. While our PVD coating is 3x thicker than industry standards, repeated exposure to chlorine will eventually turn your bright gold dull or pale.
Salt Water & Sand
The projection stone itself is harder than sand (Mohs 8.5 vs Mohs 7), so it won't scratch easily. However, salt water is corrosive to silver. It speeds up tarnishing. If you must swim with it, rinse it in fresh water immediately afterwards.
Scenario 3: Sleeping (The Tangle Risk)
Can you sleep with it? Generally, yes. The projection stone is set securely, and sleeping won't damage the photo.
The Caution: If you wear a delicate cable chain (like our 40cm models), tossing and turning can cause the chain to kink or tangle with your hair.
- My Advice: If you are a restless sleeper, hang the necklace on your bedside table. It’s a nice ritual to say "goodnight" to the photo before you drift off.
Care Guide: What to Avoid (The "Don'ts" List)
To make it easy, I’ve created this quick-reference matrix. If you are ever unsure, check this table.

Action (Lifestyle) |
Safe? |
Expert Note |
|---|---|---|
|
Swimming in Pool |
❌ NO |
Chlorine is the #1 destroyer of Gold Vermeil and Rose Gold plating. |
|
Swimming in Ocean |
⚠️ Caution |
Salt accelerates tarnishing on Silver. Rinse with fresh water immediately. |
|
Showering |
⚠️ Caution |
Waterproof, but soap scum causes optical blur. Requires frequent cleaning. |
|
Sleeping |
✅ Safe |
Generally fine. Remove if wearing a very fine chain to prevent kinks. |
|
Gym / Sweating |
⚠️ Caution |
Sweat is acidic. It won't hurt the stone, but can darken Silver over time. |
|
Sunbathing |
✅ Safe |
Unlike cheap film prints, our Nano-Carving is UV stable and won't fade. |
How to Capture the Perfect Projection for TikTok/Instagram
We know you want to share that magical reveal moment. But filming projection is tricky—cameras struggle with autofocus in the dark. Here is how to get that viral-worthy shot.
Step 1: Secure the "Point Source" Light
Do not use a ring light or a lamp. They are too diffuse. You need a sharp, single beam. The LED torch on your smartphone is perfect.
Step 2: Set the Stage
Find a plain white wall or ceiling. Turn off the room lights. The darker the room, the crisper the image.
Step 3: The "Lock and Loading" Technique
This is the secret sauce for phone cameras.
- Open your camera app.
- Hold your finger on the screen (on the wall where the projection will be) until "AE/AF LOCK" appears. This stops the camera from hunting for focus.
- Bring the flat back of the necklace to the torch light.
- Move the necklace slowly back and forth until the image snaps into focus.
The Designer’s Promise
We design PhilU pieces to be worn, loved, and lived in. We don't want them sitting in a box.
While we use surgical-grade Stainless Steel for our lifestyle range and verify every waterproof seal in our Sydney lab, treating your jewellery with a little mindfulness ensures the memory stays as sharp as the day you first saw it.
Wear it often, clean it gently, and keep the light shining.
