Step 1: The Setup (Do Not Skip This)

  • The Action: Unclasp the necklace. This is vital. If the necklace is a closed loop, the knot will just travel around the circle. You need two open ends.
  • The Location: Move to a hard, non-porous surface. A kitchen counter or a glass dining table is perfect. Do not do this on a towel or carpet; the background is too busy, and you will lose sight of the links.
  • The Light: Turn on your phone torch or a bright desk lamp and shine it directly on the knot. You need to see the individual links.

Step 2: The Lubrication

  • The Action: Place the knotted section in the centre of your workspace. Apply a drop of Baby Oil (Olive oil or mineral oil works too) directly onto the knot.
  • The Logic: Metal on metal creates friction. The oil acts as a lubricant, allowing the links to slide past each other rather than locking together. Massage it in gently with your finger for 10 seconds.

Step 3: The "Two-Needle" Tease

  • The Action: Take two sewing needles (or safety pins). Insert the tip of each needle into the absolute centre of the knot.
  • The Technique: Gently wiggle the needles outwards, away from each other. You are trying to create "slack" in the middle. Do not pull the chain ends. Focus only on expanding the knot itself.
  • The Release: As the knot loosens, use the needles to pull the loops of chain out of the tangle one by one. Once it is free, wash the necklace in warm, soapy water to remove the oil so it doesn't attract dirt.

  • Point your camera at the wall where the projection will be.
