Necklace Knotted? The Baby Oil Trick

Stop pulling immediately. Tension tightens the knot and risks snapping the delicate chain links. Lay the necklace on a hard, flat surface (like a glass table). Apply a generous drop of Baby Oil or Olive Oil directly onto the knot to lubricate the metal. Using two sewing needles, gently tease the centre of the knot open from the inside out, allowing the links to slide apart without friction.

Breathe. It's Going to Be Okay.

I can almost see you right now. You are standing in front of the mirror, running late for dinner, and your favourite PhilU projection necklace—the one with the photo of your mum—has decided to turn itself into a tiny, impossible ball of metal spaghetti.

Your instinct is to pull. To tug at the ends and hope it straightens out. Please, take a deep breath and put your hands down.

As a jeweller, I have saved hundreds of chains that clients thought were ruined. The metal isn't broken; it is just confused. Thin chains, like the box or cable chains we use to hold our projection stones, are fluid. They move like water, which means they can tangle like fishing line.

But unlike fishing line, you can't just cut it. This chain holds a memory. So, let’s fix it together, gently.

The "Baby Oil Ritual": A Step-by-Step Guide

This is the exact method we use at our bench in Sydney. It requires patience, good lighting, and a steady hand.

Step 1: The Setup (Do Not Skip This)

  • The Action: Unclasp the necklace. This is vital. If the necklace is a closed loop, the knot will just travel around the circle. You need two open ends.
  • The Location: Move to a hard, non-porous surface. A kitchen counter or a glass dining table is perfect. Do not do this on a towel or carpet; the background is too busy, and you will lose sight of the links.
  • The Light: Turn on your phone torch or a bright desk lamp and shine it directly on the knot. You need to see the individual links.

Step 2: The Lubrication

  • The Action: Place the knotted section in the centre of your workspace. Apply a drop of Baby Oil (Olive oil or mineral oil works too) directly onto the knot.
  • The Logic: Metal on metal creates friction. The oil acts as a lubricant, allowing the links to slide past each other rather than locking together. Massage it in gently with your finger for 10 seconds.

Step 3: The "Two-Needle" Tease

  • The Action: Take two sewing needles (or safety pins). Insert the tip of each needle into the absolute centre of the knot.
  • The Technique: Gently wiggle the needles outwards, away from each other. You are trying to create "slack" in the middle. Do not pull the chain ends. Focus only on expanding the knot itself.
  • The Release: As the knot loosens, use the needles to pull the loops of chain out of the tangle one by one. Once it is free, wash the necklace in warm, soapy water to remove the oil so it doesn't attract dirt.

Care Guide: What to Avoid (The "Don'ts" List)

Why do chains tangle? Usually, it’s gravity and friction. Here is how to keep your projection necklace straight.

Action (Behavior)

Safe?

Expert Note

Sleeping with Necklace On

⚠️ Caution

We toss and turn. Thin chains catch on fabric and twist. Best to take it off.

Storing in a Pile

NO

Throwing it in a jewellery box with other chains is a recipe for disaster.

Hanging Storage

YES

Gravity is your friend. Hang it on a hook so it stays vertical.

The "Ziploc" Trick

YES

If travelling, put the pendant in a small baggie but leave the clasp hanging outside the zip. This prevents the chain from tangling with itself inside the bag.

Pulling Tight

NO

Never yank a knot. It tightens the "lock" and can stretch or snap the links.

How to Capture the Perfect Projection for TikTok/Instagram

Once your necklace is untangled and clean, it’s ready for its close-up. Sharing your projection on socials is an art form. Here is how to get that viral-worthy shot.

1. The Backdrop is Key

Don't project onto a busy background (like a patterned wall or a messy room). The Fix: Use a plain white wall, a sheet of paper, or even the palm of your hand. A clean background ensures the high-definition Nano-Carving pops.

2. The Lighting "Sweet Spot"

The Mistake: Trying to project in a brightly lit room. The ambient light washes out the projection. The Fix: Dim the lights. Use your phone’s flashlight as the only light source. Hold the light source steady and close to the back of the crystal.

3. The Focus Hack

Your phone camera will try to focus on the necklace, not the projection on the wall. The Fix:

  • Point your camera at the wall where the projection will be.
  • Tap and hold the screen to lock focus (AE/AF Lock).
  • Then bring the necklace into frame and project the image. The projection will be razor-sharp.

The PhilU Craftsmanship Promise

We select our chains specifically for their balance of strength and fluidity. We use solid sterling silver or 316L stainless steel links that are soldered shut to prevent snapping.

However, even the highest quality chain is subject to the laws of physics. It can knot. But now you know that a knot isn't the end of the road. It’s just a moment to slow down, breathe, and give your memory a little tender loving care.

Treat it gently, and it will hang close to your heart for years to come.
