The safest choice is a clear, well-lit photo with one or two main subjects near the centre. Because the viewing area is small, composition matters more than using a technically perfect camera file.

Good photo characteristics

• Clear subject: faces or the main object should be easy to identify.
• Good lighting: avoid very dark faces or strong backlighting.
• Useful crop: keep important details away from the extreme edges.
• Original file: use the original image when available rather than a screenshot or compressed social-media copy.
• Simple composition: fewer subjects are easier to read at miniature scale than a large group.

Older printed photos

A photo of an old print can work if it is captured straight-on, evenly lit and without glare. Use the highest-quality scan or photograph available.

Black-and-white photos
